Limitations
Mapping ‘Āina Orgs with points is tricky because some ‘Āina Orgs are better represented by polygons, and some are better not listed at all due to the sacredness or fragility of the indexed site. Other complications involve differences in the range of address indicating the actual physical land of ‘Āina Orgs on that land doing work versus an address indicating an office in a building or a home, a P.O. Box, or non-site ‘Āina programs hosted in other building structures like community centers, schools, and civic sites, to name a few examples.
Data is a valuable part of the contemporary ecosystem of research and decision-making influencing policy and funding, however, no publically accessible geographic dataset fully represents the work and growth of ‘āina organizations. While not a living directory, the dataset represents the presence of an existing network of ‘āina organizations and partners engaged in on-the-ground, place-based efforts to increase local capacity for climate resilience, cultural resurgence, and community wellbeing.
Similar to how a word file is necessary for writing a report, in data terms, a shapefile is necessary for visualizing place-based dataset on a map. When talking about datasets, maps are created using a geographic information system (GIS) shapefile that includes a wide range of information about specific places, often identified geographically by zip codes and neighborhoods. These are often combined with other datasets, for example to name a few, the census, health surveys, economic data, performance metrics, and climate change research.
There are no expressed warranties associated with the release of this dataset. Specifically no warranty is made that the GIS data or any subsequent updates will be error free and no warranty is made regarding the positional or thematic accuracy of the GIS data. The GIS data and any features it depicts do not represent or confer any legal rights, privileges, benefits, boundaries or claims of any kind.
